A frequent question is whether OCS 2007 supports 64-bit. The short answer is “no”, Office Communications Server 2007 is available only in a 32-bit edition (note: January 2009 update – OCS 2007 R2 only supports 64-bit).
However, there are two notable exceptions:
- WOW 64 support allows the 32-bit OCS 2007 to run on a 64-bit version of the Windows O/S.
- The OCS backend role, which is a Microsoft SQL database, can be run on 64-bit editions of Windows Server (without WOW64)
The OCS 2007 Administrative Tools can also run on WOW64.
The Microsoft “Office Communications Server 2007 Document: Supportability Guide” http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=f8cc9b59-225f-425d-bd3a-e506396c6207 provides more details on 64-bit support, and specific Windows Server versions that OCS 2007 can run on. Page 9 and 12 detail support for 64-bit.
Microsoft has recently (late Aug 2008) committed to having full 64-bit support (in fact, no more 32-bit support) in the next release of OCS. More details can be found here: http://communicationsserverteam.com/archive/2008/08/29/246.aspx
