July 2010 Updates to Communicator and OCS (Cumulative Update 6)

There has been a new round of updates for Communicator 2007 R2, OCS 2007 R2, and OCS 2007 R2 Group Chat – known as Cumulative Update 6 (CU6).

** Sept 2, 2010 Update **: Microsoft has temporarily removed the Cumulative Update 6 (CU6) until an issue with the Response Group Service can be fixed. See News: Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Response Group Service Fails After Applying July 2010 Cumulative Updates for more information. The corresponding Microsoft Knowledge Base article is KB 2401878 and can be viewed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2401878.

** July 30, 2010 Update **: It appears that the reported CU6 problems have been attributable to either the back end database update not being installed first, or the OCS 2007 R2 .NET Framework 4.0 issue. Having said that, there was at least one report (on this blog) of the “mismatch error” even after the database install was applied first.

** July 26, 2010 Update **:  There have been several reports of problems (failure of the Front End Service to start) after applying the CU6 updates on the server. Consider holding off applying this update until more information is known.  It is important to install the CU 6 update to the back end database role first (see Description of the cumulative update package for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 database: July, 2010).  So far, the problems appear to be related to this, but more information to come.

I had the mismatch issue with a clients OCS environment. I installed the DBupdate first, but the OCSCore.msp and Server.msp updates failed to install correctly, resulting in the FE service failing to start with the same critical error: code C3EE78F8

The cause of the update failures was the Trend Micro AV client. Once I unloaded Trend and reinstalled the core and server.msp files, the service started without error.

Thanks for the feedback. The dbupgrade was absolutely performed before any other update was applied.

  • The error you are getting is consistent with not applying the OCS2009-DBUpgrade.msi before any of the other server updates. Tom Pacyk has a good write-up on this error in a recent post.

Hopefully there is not another issue at play here.

I did the dbupdate first, then the front end using the cumulative server update installer. Even though, both servers were updated using files from CU6, I recieve the below:

The component Live Communications User Services (application: 1) reported a critical error: code C3EE78F8 (Enterprise Edition Server successfully registered with the back-end, but a stored procedure version mismatch was detected. The service will not start until this problem is resolved.

Cause: The database schema and the Enterprise Edition Server were updated by different installation packages.
    Resolution:
Ensure both the Enterprise Edition Server and back-end were installed or modified by the same installation package.). The service has to stop.

  • Which if the three installation methods (detailed in the KB) did you use? I installed from the Cumulative Server Update Installer with no issues.

    A couple of suggestions:
    1) If the service is failing to start there should be a reasonably helpful event log entry as to why…
    2) Carefully read the instructions in the KB article.
    3) Did you see the comment about installing the OCS2009-DBUpgrade.msi first?

    Hope that helps,
    Curtis

I also installed CU 6 and have major problems between the database and front end. I now cannot start my front end service rtcsrv. Nice update! Anyone else having issues?

  • Thanks for the updates from the field guys,
    Curtis

I was able to successfully run the CU6 updates – just make sure your run the OCS2009-DBUpgrade.msi first. This updates the backend SQL databases schema, stored procedures, etc. that the services check before starting.

    OCS2009-DBUpgrade.msi POOLNAME=your poolname

    Hi,

just be warned: one of the hotfixes coming from this package, broke my whole EE system, all services started throwing serialization exceptions, “unauthorized” errors, back-end schema mismatches etc.

I decided to uninstall all these updates, couple of restarts, everything works now normally.

Next time I will be more more careful, OCS is simply the product that you musnt play with.
